Lesson overview

This 105–120 minute C1 lesson begins with a substantial reading about the historical pressure building in East Germany before November 1989, including emigration, the Berlin Wall, peaceful demonstrations and the Prague embassy crisis. Learners then watch the selected Vox account of how new travel rules were communicated, reported and acted on. The communication error accelerated that evening's chain of events within a much larger political process; it was not the sole cause of the Wall's fall.

Students develop advanced language for reporting interpretation and consequence, compare factual events with cautious past counterfactuals, and transfer their learning to workplace, travel and university messages. The final source-grounded evidence-card communication review asks groups to retell each stage, connect cause and consequence, use hindsight throughout and recommend practical safeguards.

The Ultra Digital Game, Hindsight, extends practice with situations that went wrong and past counterfactuals. Normal classroom use is included in the 105–120-minute lesson estimate.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the lesson, students can:

  • Examine how unclear official information can change as it moves between people and institutions.

  • Reconstruct the chain from written regulation to press-conference answer, reporting and public response.

  • Develop C1 language for reporting interpretation and consequence.

  • Use third conditionals, Had-inversion and modal perfects to discuss alternative outcomes cautiously.

  • Deliver a concise, source-grounded communication review.

  • Use Hindsight for extended practice with past counterfactuals at Ultra tier.

Lesson structure

A practical sequence from warm-up to final task.

4 stages
  1. When information goes wrong

Learners consider how unclear messages affect decisions and read about the growing historical pressure on East Germany before November 1989.

  2. Reconstruct the chain

Students follow the written regulation, live answer, news coverage and public response in the selected source.

  3. Interpretation, consequence and hindsight

Learners practise C1 reporting language, past counterfactuals and the careful analysis of new messages.

  4. The Communication Breakdown

Teams retell the chronological evidence, connect the stages, use past counterfactuals and recommend safeguards in a spoken communication review.
