Lesson overview

This A1/A1+ lesson uses a short BBC Learning English clothes-shopping conversation to help students build practical language for buying clothes. Students learn common clothing items and colours, listen for key information, and practise useful phrases for asking what someone needs, checking whether an item is available in a particular colour, suggesting alternatives and choosing what to buy.

Students also work with `this / these` and `it / them` in a clear shopping context before preparing their own shopping choices and completing a supported roleplay. The Ultra extension adds repeated speaking practice with changing partners and private shop stock, giving learners a real reason to ask questions, respond to availability and suggest alternatives.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the lesson, students can:

  • Identify and name eight common clothes items.

  • Understand the main information in a short clothes-shopping conversation.

  • Ask for a clothing item in a particular colour.

  • Use `this / these` and `it / them` appropriately in a shopping context.

  • Use simple shop language to suggest an item, respond to availability and choose what to buy.

  • Complete a short supported clothes-shopping roleplay.
